Several starters out for Michigan at Rutgers

Ahead of the Michigan football team’s road matchup against Rutgers on Saturday evening (7:30, ABC), the Michigan Insider on 247Sports has the latest on several key Wolverines players whose status was questionable heading into Saturday.

Starting wide receiver Roman Wilson, edge rusher Jaylen Harrell, starting safety Makari Paige, starting left tackle Ryan Hayes  and  did not make the trip, and are OUT for Saturday’s game according to Michigan’s official radio broadcast. High-usage rotation players offensive tackle Trente Jones and  linebacker Kalel Mullings are also out for the game, according a Michigan spokesperson told 247Sports.

The cause and severity of their injuries are unknown. The four starters do play at fairly deep positions, however. Wilson’s absence will mean more snaps for Andrel Anthony, AJ Henning and Darrius Clemons. Harrell will be replaced by a rotation of edge defenders including Eyabi Okie, Braiden McGregor and Derrick Moore. Paige’s absence will mean more snaps for RJ Moten and Rod Moore. Michigan will go with first-time starter Jeffrey Persi at left tackle.

Gemon Green made the trip, and was warming up for the game, making him PROBABLE, at least in some capacity. Green, a starting cornerback for the Wolverines, was on the receiving end of an attack from Michigan State players in the Michigan Stadium tunnel, in which video evidence showed the fifth-year senior being struck in the head with a helmet. Green’s family enlisted attorney Tom Mars with the intention of pressing charges, and according to Mars, Green was in concussion protocol this week.

As they have been for more than a month, preseason starting quarterback Cade McNamara and starting linebacker Nikhai Hill-Green are also OUT. It is unclear if and when they may be available again this season.

Projected starting tight end Erick All, long-snapper William Wagner and safety/special teams leader Caden Kolesar all remain out with season-ending injuries.
